Editorial Standards

Five Buttons publishes four independent titles. This page describes how their content is produced. It applies to every title, and contributors to all four are held to it.

What we publish, and what we do not

Our titles cover medical grants, clinical education, nutrition and consumer technology. Two of them, Grants for Medical and Doctorable, cover subjects where inaccurate information can affect someone's health or finances. Those titles carry the strictest sourcing and review requirements described below.

We do not publish sponsored articles presented as editorial. Where a piece is commercial, it is labelled. Advertising is sold and served separately from editorial and no advertiser reviews, approves or influences an article before publication.

How content is commissioned

Articles are commissioned from named contributors with relevant background in the subject. Every article carries a byline. We do not publish anonymously, and we do not publish under invented names.

Sourcing

Claims of fact are referenced to a primary source wherever one exists. On clinical subjects that means the published literature, and citations are given in a form a reader can follow and check. Where a claim cannot be sourced, it does not run.

Review

Content on health and medical subjects is reviewed by a person with relevant qualifications before publication. Reviewers are named on the article they reviewed, and their stated credential is the credential they hold. We do not describe a contributor or reviewer as holding a qualification we have not seen evidence of, and where a contributor is training rather than qualified, the page says so.

How we use AI, stated plainly

We use AI in the production of content, and we are specific about where. It is used for structuring, for research assistance and for administrative work. It is not used to originate the experience, the judgement or the opinions in an article.

The framework our contributors follow is published in full and open to inspection: AI Content and E-E-A-T: What Actually Has to Come From You. It sets out a seven step process in which the author documents their own raw material first, the model interrogates them section by section, their answers are combined with that material, sources are found and then checked by the author, and the author reviews every line and every citation before approving.

The principle underneath it, quoted from that framework: "Experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness have to come from a credible human author."

In practice that means a human writes down what they actually did before anything is generated, a human checks the research the model brings back rather than trusting it, and a human adds the opinions, because a model cannot have one about someone else's work. No article is published on a Five Buttons title without a named human author who has read every line of it and stands behind it.

Updates

Articles on subjects that change are reviewed and refreshed. Where an article has been materially updated, the page shows when, and says what changed.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we correct it and we say that we did. The process, including how to report an error and how long we take to respond, is on our Corrections page.
